PART NUMBER 2 AND 5 ARE CALLED THE CONE AND 3, 4, ARE THE CUP. WHEN
REPACKING THE BEARINGS THE GREASE APPLICATION AREA IS TO PRESS AS MUCH
GREASE INTO THE CONE ASSEMBLY AS POSSIBLE AND APPLY TO THE SURFACE OF
THE CUP. THE CUP WILL REMAIN IN THE HUB PART # 24 OR 25 IF WITH BRAKES.
INSPECT THE CONES FOR RUST OR PITS. IN SOME POORLY MAINTAINED ASSEMBLIES
THE CONE WILL BE BROKEN AND MUST BE REPLACED. IF IN QUESTION REPLACE
THEM WITH NEW. RUN YOUR FINGER OVER THE CUP SURFACE AND FEEL FOR A RIDGE
OR HEAVY RUST PITS. IF ANY RIDGE OR HEAVY PITTING IS DETECTED THEY
MUST BE REPLACED. BEST THING TO DO IF THE CONE HAS A RIDGE IS TO CALL A
AUTO PARTS STORE AND FIND OUT IF THEY PROVIDE A SERVICE OF REPLACING THE
CUPS. DO NOT TRY TO
DO THIS YOURSELF UNLESS YOU ARE A EXPERIENCED IN SUCH WORK. DO NOT
DO THIS AT A NORMAL SERVICE STATION AS I HAVE FOUND THAT MOST
SERVICE STATION DO NOT EVEN KNOW THE ASSEMBLY HAS 2 BEARINGS. I MOST
CASES WHEN I STOP TO HELP PEOPLE WITH A DISABLED TRAILERS ON THE

THEM A PUMP EVERY MONTH OR SO AND THEY REMAINED PERFECT OVER A 9
YEAR PERIOD. |

NEVER USE A STORE BOUGHT GREASE THAT SAYS FOR
GENERAL PURPOSE OR MULIT PURPOSE IN MOST CASES IT IS JUST SOME
THING THAT WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS. REMEMBER IF REPACKING YOUR BEARING MAKE
SURE THAT YOU CLEAN ALL THE OLD GREASE OUT OF THE HUB AND BEARINGS AND
ALWAYS IF YOU USE BEARING LUBBERS
ALWAYS USE THE SAME GREASE TO KEEP THEM FULL. TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE IF
YOU PLAN TO PUT YOUR TRAILER IN STORAGE FOR THE WINTER REMOVE THE HUBS
ASSEMBLY AND CHECK IT FOR WATER THAT MAY HAVE ENTERED THE HUB. REPACK IF
GREASE IS DISCOLORED OR MILKY COLORED AS THE BEARINGS WILL RUST IF NOT
REPACKED AND THEN THE YOU WILL HAVE THE EXPENSE OF REPLACING THE CONES
AND POSSIBLE ALSO THE CUPS NEXT SPRING SO PERFORM THE MAINTENANCE AND IT
WILL MEAN LONG LIFE AND NO BREAKDOWNS ON THE HIGHWAY TO SPOIL YOUR TRIP. NEVER MIX GREASE BRANDS! Jim Baudo |
